Paul Simon's Rewrite resonates

The musical genius Paul Simon has done it again with his latest release, So Beautiful Or So What. Rewrite is a song on this album that resonates with me. The song speaks of a man's devotion to the discipline of writing. He works at a car wash by day and works on his story at night. I empathize with this character as my time is also limited in regards to my writing. Between working my own version of the character's car wash, and managing my other entrepreneurial efforts, I also experience early mornings and late nights as I painstakingly breathe life into my next novel.

But, of course, time is something none of us will ever have enough of and my writing schedule of late has been tested by an upcoming move, acclimating to a 9 to 5, a weekly makeup artistry gig for Bobbi Brown, college reunions, weddings, random gigs like working the VIP tent at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic (that's me to the right of Hugh Jackman, either yawning or coughing, I'm not sure which, but I'll bet I was tired...), producing events, socializing, and anything else that pops up at any given moment.

I have also been doing a lot of reading to enrich my writing; a welcome passion I manage to squeeze in on subway rides, lunch hours, and as a night cap.

But despite my constant state of exhaustion at doing a million things at once, my doggie, Avery, is getting plenty of rest as she summers in Boston. In the spirit of co-parenting with her father, she is enjoying a big grassy backyard where she frolics and enjoys the sun all day.

I didn't think it would be possible to miss a dog so much, but I take comfort in that she will soon be back with me in my small New York apartment, which I am sure she will love after her time away in what is probably like camp for her.

She doesn't realize it, of course, but I do all that I do so that I can one day provide a big grassy yard of my own for her where we can both frolic in the sun and pretend we are at camp.

Maybe I will get some rest then.
